Morbidities and treatment preferences for breast cancer among women from the Swiss federal canton of Bern. The purpose of this study was to collect sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment-related information from women with primary breast cancer in a Swiss Federal State, and to describe morbidity and treatment preferences. We performed a retrospective analysis of data from the Cancer Registry of Bern (n=1052) and of tumour registry data from 1999-2002 (n=1054). More than 85% of women had invasive breast cancer, the median age was 60 years (49-72 years) and the majority had estrogen-receptor-positive tumours. Treatment preferences included conservative surgery (77%), radiotherapy (86%), and chemotherapy (82%). Overall morbidity was high (n=603): radiotherapy (26%), type of surgery (19%), type of systemic therapy (17%), pain (16%), lymphedema (15%), and scoliosis (13%). High morbidity was associated with younger age, higher tumour size, less often a previous breast-conserving therapy, and no radiotherapy. There were only small differences in age, tumour size, and resection margins according to treatment preferences. Prevalence of symptomatic axillary lymph node metastasis was highest in patients of younger age. Morbidity is high in women with primary breast cancer, and previous breast-conserving therapy is associated with low morbidity.
